India team basks in media glory

India newspaper headline on cricket win

The win has dominated the newspaper headlines

Indian newspapers have hailed the cricket team’s win in the World Twenty20 final as a victory of youth. India beat Pakistan in the final in Johannesburg by five runs to clinch their first major trophy since 1983.

India’s three seniormost cricketers, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly, opted out of this 20 overs-a-side tournament.

The team, captained by 26-year-old Mahendra Singh Dhoni, included a host of youngsters.

Firecrackers erupted in cities and towns after India’s nailbiting win. Fans poured out into the streets celebrating till late at night.

The win was the only news on television channels well past midnight, with some former cricketers and journalists dancing on the sets of one channel.

The Indian cricket board announced a bonus of $2m for the team, and a $250,000 cash prize to Yuvraj Singh for his record feat of hitting six sixes in an over.

India’s narrow win over traditional rivals Pakistan dominated Tuesday’s papers.

Young blood in a billion hearts, headlined The Indian Express newspaper.

‘Youth has triumphed’

“The team had done virtually the impossible. They had walked in with the experience of one Twenty20 international before this, they had no coach… and they did not have much of a preparation either,” the newspaper said.

Superpower: India 2020, chimed the business newspaper The Economic Times.

“Youth has triumphed. This team symbolises India. It has loads of aggression, tonnes of determination and a feisty fierceness that can crumble the strongest of opponents,” the paper said.

India rule again headlined The Pioneer.

“What kept India hot and happening was the fire in the belly, the self-belief, the youthful vigour and of course, a stroke of lady luck which put down an equally, if not better performing, Pakistani team,” the paper said.

India Is World Power, agreed The Asian Age.

Sports website Cricinfo was more circumspect.

“The only regret, if at all, that a cracking match was decided by a mistake, and not a burst of brilliance,” wrote editor Sambit Bal, referring to Pakistani batsman Misbah-ul-Haq who got out trying to loft the ball over the keeper’s head with only five runs left to win.

“But India deserved to win because they simply refused to lose.”

‘Refreshing energy’

“Throughout the tournament, India have played with a refreshing energy and positiveness which, on top of their natural flair, has endeared them to the fans.”

Sambit Bal also praised Pakistan’s efforts.

“They were worthy finalists, and they played with a heartening sense of purpose and discipline,” he wrote.

Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar said India’s cricket was in “safe hands” after the win.

“Dhoni led the team to a fabulous victory and I can say that Indian cricket is in safe hands,” he was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India.

Pakistani papers have hailed the game as a ‘victory for cricket’

Pakistani newspapers said cricket was the winner in the final match.

“There is no shame in this defeat even though it might be at the hands of Pakistan’s biggest rivals,” said Dawn newspaper.

“Malik [captain] and Lawson [coach] have revived Pakistan as a force in world cricket. It is an era begun with energy passion, discipline and much excitement,” the paper said.
