Whatmore keen on coaching India

Posted by skraghav on May 29, 2007

Outgoing Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore has once again expressed his interest in coaching India, describing it as a challenging assignment. “My contract with Bangladesh cricket team ends on June 1. Then I need to recharge my batteries. You all know there may be another challenge not far away,” Whatmore said referring to his ongoing negotiations with the BCCI.

“That will remain the decision of the employer,” he hastened to add. The BCCI’s seven-member coach selection committee is scheduled to meet in Bangalore on June 4 to choose a new coach for the Indian team.

“And on the June 4, if they (BCCI) make a decision (in my favour) that’s fair. If not, that’s fine,” he said. Whatmore, speaking to newspersons after his side stumbled to a huge innings defeat against India, said that the margin was ‘too hard to scale’.

He praised vice captain Mohammad Ashraful’s blitz knock of 67, saying, “It had a touch of brilliance, though being more akin to one-day cricket. But he is a very, very good player. It was a good knock.”

Whatmore, who coached Bangladesh to World Cup triumphs against India and South Africa, said the team still had a long way to go.

“How we will become more competitive in the longer term needs clear thinking. But we certainly need to play more than what we do.”

India win Mirpur Test, seal series 1-0

Posted by skraghav on May 29, 2007

India beat Bangladesh by an innings and 239 runs on day three of the second Test at Mirpur on Sunday to register their biggest ever Test win and seal the series 1-0.

India declared its first innings at 610 for three on day two and then decimated the Bangladesh batting. Resuming on the overnight score of 58 for five, Bangladesh added 60 more runs in the first session for the loss of the remaining five wickets. Skipper Rahul Dravid promptly enforced the follow on. In a replay of the first essay, the Bangladesh batting collapsed yet again and they were bowled out for 253 in the second innings.

Zaheer Khan was the pick of the Indian bowlers picking up seven wickets in the match, including his fourth five-wicket haul. He was adjudged the Man of the Match. Sachin Tendulkar was adjudged Man of the Series.

Bangladesh follow on

In the morning, Bangladesh was bowled out for 118 in its first innings, thereby conceding a 492-run lead to India. Zaheer Khan continued with his fine spell. He trapped Saqibul Hasan lbw on his overnight score of 30.

Mohammad Sharif was lbw to Anil Kumble for 13. Debutant pacer Ishant Sharma then picked up his first Test wicket. He had Mashrafe Mortaza caught by Kumble for two. Zaheer bowled Mohammad Rafique for 12 and Khaled Mashud was caught by M S Dhoni off a Kumble delivery for 25.

Disastrous start

The hosts made a disastrous start to their second essay losing the wicket of Javed Omar with the first ball from Zaheer. He was caught behind by Mahendra Singh Dhoni for a duck.

At lunch, Bangladesh was 10 for one. On resumption of play, skipper Habibul Bashar and Shahriar Nafees were sent back to the pavillion in quick succession. Bashar was caught by Rahul Dravid off a Zaheer delivery for five and Nafees edged a R P Singh delivery to Dhoni for four.

With Bangladesh on the mat, Mohammad Ashraful and Rajin Saleh put on 81 runs from just 9.1 overs with the vice captain smashing a 26-ball fifty. Ashraful made 67 from 41 balls with 12 fours and two sixes before he holed out to Sachin Tendulkar off a Anil Kumble delivery. Saleh was the next man out. He holed out to Sourav Ganguly off a Romesh Powar delivery for 42. Powar accounted for Saqibul Hasan in the post-tea session. He was caught by Dravid for 15. The spinner then had Khaled Mashud caught by Tendulkar for eight.

Mashrafe Mortaza and Mohammad Sharif put on 54 runs before the latter was caught by Anil Kumble off his own bowling for 17. Tendulkar picked up the last two wickets. He trapped Mohammad Rafique lbw for 11 and then had Mortaza caught by Kumble for 70.
